COMMON LABORER
SUMMARY: To perform unskilled and skilled labor in the construction, maintenance, and repair activities of the Public Works Department, sometimes exercising considerable independence, while being accountable for all results. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the supervision of the DPW Leadman.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following (these examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform):
- Perform variety of complex tasks in the maintenance and repair of streets, alleys, sidewalks, curb and gutters, and green spaces.
- Perform all manner of maintenance required by all city owned buildings and properties.
- Form, mix, pour, and finish concrete.
- Operate or assist with power-driven snow removal equipment.
- On occasion, operate the following equipment in the performance of public works duties, including but not limited to: Tandem Dump Truck, Street Sweeper, Front End Loader, Backhoe, Grader, Oshkosh Plow, and Snow Blower.
- Perform the duties of a utility representative and be assigned where needed, including but not limited to: Reading Meters, Turning On\Off Water Valves, and General Utility Maintenance.
- Perform any other work that may be required by the City and the DPW Leadman
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT
- Must have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
- Possess a motor vehicle operator’s CDL license or be able to obtain with 6 months of employment.
- Pass pre-employment background check.
- Physically active and strong; show mechanical aptitude.
PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
- One (1) year or more of technical school or college.
- Ability to walk, climb, lift, and perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in all types of weather and under a variety of working conditions.
- Ability to work effectively with other employees.
- Knowledge of work methods, practices and procedures involved in a variety of construction, maintenance and repair activities.
- Knowledge of the operation of power-driven equipment and tools.
- Knowledge of the standard practices and procedures used in the operations of special automotive and power-driven equipment used in public works or related construction, maintenance, and repair activities.
- Knowledge of State and local traffic laws, ordinances and practices involving the operation of various kinds of special automotive equipment and power-driven tools and machinery used in public works activities.
- Familiarity with streets and utility systems with the City of Bessemer.
