The City of Bessemer is seeking candidates for a Cemetery Sexton and Light Equipment Operator combined position. This is a full-time position which includes a 3% defined benefit pension, medical, dental, and vision insurance, along with earned time off. Must have a high school diploma and a CDL B license to be considered for the position.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND QUALIFICATIONS
LIGHT EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
SUMMARY: Perform difficult and responsible public works construction and maintenance work involving the efficient operation of various kinds of special automotive and power-driven equipment along with performing related work as required.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Sanding all major and local streets, intersections and hills
- Be able to sweep major and local streets
SUPER VISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the supervision of the City Manager or Leadman
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following (these examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform):
- Operate with care, skill and efficiency various kinds of special automotive and power-driven equipment, particularly the following: Dump Truck, Sander Truck, Street Sweeper, Vac Truck, Skidsteer, and other equipment
- Operate on occasion the following equipment: Front-end Loader, Backhoe, Sewer rodding machine, Grader, and Oshkosh plow.
- Perform a variety of laborer tasks to be assigned as needed
- Perform any other work as may be required by the City
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT
- Knowledge of operations, standard practices and procedures, and maintenance requirements (including equipment lubrication and repair activities) of various types of special automotive and power-driven equipment used in construction and related work
- Knowledge of state and local traffic laws and ordinances involving the operation of various kinds of special automotive equipment and power-driven tools and machinery used in public works activities.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Familiarity with streets and principal locations in the City
- Physical agility
- Must be able to work effectively and communicate clearly with other employees
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in all types of weather and under a variety of working conditions
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Must have a motor vehicle operator’s CDL License B, manual transmission preferred

CEMETERY SEXTON
SUMMARY: Plan, supervise and perform operations at the Hillcrest Cemetery. Perform related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: The City Manager or Leadman is the Administrative Supervisor. The Sexton conducts ongoing operations with considerable independence and is held accountable for results.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Technical direction is exercised over contracted services (mowing contracts). Laborers and seasonal help will be supervised in conjunction with the Leadman.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following (these examples do not ·include all of the tasks in which the employee may be expected to perform):
- Plan and supervise operations within the Cemetery, including contracted and city provided services
- Train various DPW employees on cemetery operations
- Coordinate and inspect maintenance of cemetery grounds (lawn mowing, weed eating, tree trimming, picking up sticks/leaves, beautifying the cemetery grounds, fixing grave sites)
- Operate and maintain city equipment necessary for cemetery maintenance
- Coordinate and supervise the placement of foundations for monuments and memorials
- Prepare and maintain burial records and reports
- Responsible for selling and recording property properly within the cemetery
- Coordinate burial schedules and records with the office staff
- Assist the general public visiting the cemetery
- Prepare and excavate grave sites
- Perform custodial work as required on buildings and grounds within the cemetery
- Perform related work as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT: An employee in this classification, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following knowledge, training and experience.
- Knowledge of the procedures, practices, materials and equipment utilized in the operation and maintenance of a municipal cemetery.
- Knowledge of safety practices to minimize injury and property damage.
- Ability to supervise and train other staff
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to read, understand, and apply city cemetery policies with the general public and funeral directors
- Demonstrate skill operating equipment, including backhoe, front end loader, trucks, etc.
- Skill in preparing and maintaining records and reports on paper and digitally
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with public officials, fellow workers and the general public.
- Skill in horticulture as related to maintenance of a municipal cemetery.
- High School diploma or GED
- A CDL B operator’s license is required.
