Job Description and Details:
The City of Bessemer Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is seeking sealed bids to construct two pickleball courts on the corner of S. Sophie Street and E. Sellar St., located in downtown Bessemer.
The prospective bidder will be responsible for the project from start to finish and will adhere to City of Bessemer and Downtown Development Authority rules and regulations.
The project will consist of the following:
- Removal of sod and placement of appropriate aggregate (12″ minimum) to support proper drainage and slope of concrete pickleball courts.
- Construction of two (2) 5” thick 4,000 PSI exterior concrete w/monifiber and #4 rebar 3′ O.C. side by side with north/south facing pickleball courts, 64’x70’ total area, with cushioned synthetic playing surface such as Herculan pickleball court series 6 mm.
- Placement of 4’ chain-link fencing with protective top cap with two entrance/exit gates, fencing to be installed in the center of 3/4 washed stone border. Location of gates to be determined by owner.
- Removal of old city sidewalk on E. Sellar Street, beginning from new sidewalk on Sophie Street, continuing West until the second power pole, approximately 100′ x 8′ x 4″ with integrated curb 12″ thick.
- Each Pickleball court should have 1″ elevation difference between center line of the courts and outside edge of the courts, crowned east to west.
- Purchase and placement of two pickleball court nets
- Bid shall include the complete restoration of site
- The installation of 2 LED Solar light poles with time, mounted to the appropriately sized Sonotubes. 4′ below grade minimum.
- Bid shall also include a border of 30″ x 4″ thick of 3/4 washed stone with geotextile fabric underneath for weed barrier.

Contractor Requirements
- Contractor shall be licensed and insured
- Contractor shall submit a bid for each item above providing pricing for each of the bulleted items, along with listing possible subcontractors for each item
- Contractor shall work with the City’s Office Staff and Department of Public Works to ensure the project is adhering to the city’s zoning and building permits and requirements
- Contractor shall provide a timeline of scheduled work and will complete the project by June 30, 2026.
Bidding requirements
- The City will be accepting bids until October 15th at 3:00 PM (CST). Bids will be opened at a special meeting of the DDA scheduled for October 21, 2025, in the Council Chamber in Bessemer City Hall, 411 S. Sophie Street, Bessemer, MI 49911.
- Sealed bids can be handed in at the Clerk’s office at Bessemer City Hall between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Please label the outside envelope with “Pickleball Courts-2025/2026.”

- The DDA reserves the right to delete items from the bid, depending on budgeting and timing constraints
- The DDA reserves the right to reject any or all bids and to accept the bid deemed the most advantageous to the DDA.
